Mike Causey
Commissioner of Insurance
Mike Causey was elected to the office of Commissioner of Insurance in 2016, becoming the first Republican Insurance Commissioner of North Carolina. He was reelected for a second term in 2020 and a third term in 2024.
Commissioner Causey is a native of rural Guilford County where he grew up on a dirt road produce farm and attended public schools, learning the value of hard work.
He has been a surveyor, construction manager small business owner and spent over 25 years in the insurance business, from agent to agency manager to Superintendent of Agencies supervising multiple states.
After going off to school and serving the U.S. Army, Commissioner Causey worked as a field engineer in the construction industry and then began his career in the insurance industry where he learned virtually every facet of the insurance industry - working as an agency manager, as superintendent of agencies and owning his own agency.
Commissioner Causey enjoys serving the citizens of North Carolina as the NC Department of Insurance, working to meets the insurance and safety needs of North Carolina families and businesses.
Causey earned an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology from the W.W. Holding Technical Institute (now Wake Tech), a Bachelor of Science degree from High Point University and Executive Management Certificate from Purdue University.
He and his wife, Hisae have one adult daughter.
