Renew a Collection Agency License

NOTE:  In 2021, the North Carolina Department of Insurance transitioned to a new version of SBS (State Based Systems). At that time, all active Collection Agencies were assigned a new North Carolina Permit Number. For the 2024-2025 renewal period, your license certificate will reflect only the  Permit Number assigned in 2021.

All North Carolina Collection Agencies must update their correspondence to debtors with the new Permit Number. Our office provided a grace period for the update. When the correspondence to debtors have been updated, the updated documents need to be submitted to our office for review. All renewal documents received with the old Permit Numbers will cause a delay in renewals

SBS identifies all Collection Agencies with a company number. When contacting NCDOI, please reference your company number as your permit number.

The annual license renewal period for Non-Insurance Business Entities (NIBE), collection agencies, motor clubs and premium finance companies, begins in April through June 30th. The North Carolina Licensing Office of Pearson VUE will send email notifications to all existing licensees with instructions regarding the renewal process. If you have not received a renewal notification by May 1st, contact the licensing office at 866-265-6329. Licenses must be renewed by the June 30th expiration date.

The on-line renewal application must be submitted using the North Carolina License Management System (NCLMS). Renewal submissions are not complete until both the application and payment has been received.
