North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Dashanique Winston, 22, of 2611 Broadwell Drive, Raleigh. Winston is charged with one count of insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies. She is also charged with operating a vehicle with no license, a misdemeanor.
According to special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Winston told State Farm Insurance Company that she had paid her insurance premium by presenting altered bank statements attempting to show coverage following an automobile accident. Winston’s policy had lapsed before the accident, investigators found. The value of the insurance payout she attempted to obtain was $5,500, records show.
According to the arrest warrant, the offenses occurred on May 10 and May 11, 2024.
Winston was arrested on Feb. 20 and later released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. She appeared in Wake County District Court on Feb. 25.
“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”
