Mecklenburg County man charged with insurance fraud after claiming car had been hit by a deer

RALEIGH

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Daniel Alston Holmes, 33, of 227 Long Creek Parkway, Charlotte. Holmes is charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

According to special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Holmes told Peak Property and Casualty his car had been hit by a deer when it had actually been involved in a hit and run accident.

According to the arrest warrants, the offense occurred on Sept. 12, 2023.

Holmes was arrested on Jan. 30 in Gaston County and released on a $8,000 secured bond. Gilbert appeared in Mecklenburg County District Court on Feb. 3.

“Insurance-related crimes hit consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud and other related crimes in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
