North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Shallee Aleah Smith, 34, of 7238 Rose Terrace Ct., Charlotte. Smith was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.
According to special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Smith provided false statements on her automobile policy with Dairyland Insurance Company. Smith’s vehicle had sustained damage and an attempted theft that she did not disclose during renewal.
The incident occurred on Sept. 29, 2023, according to the arrest warrants.
Smith was arrested on Dec. 10 and released on a $50,000 unsecured bond. She appeared in Mecklenburg County District Court on Dec. 11.
“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
