North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Darrius Moore, 35, of 224 Stratford Road, Archdale. Moore was charged with four counts of insurance fraud, three counts of obtaining property by false pretense, two counts of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, two counts of forgery, three counts of common law uttering and two counts of perjury, all felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Moore of providing false documents claiming that a water leak, a power outage and a power surge caused damage to a refrigerator and spoiled food in an attempt to collect $10,869.08 on a renters’ insurance policy.

Arrest warrants claim that Moore:

  • Provided misleading information claiming that an overflow of dirty water at an apartment on Ward Avenue in High Point resulted in damage to personal property, causing him to stay in a hotel for 23 nights.
  • Provided a false receipt for the purchase of chafing dish claimed as damaged on an insurance form.
  • Presented a false form from an appliance repair shop to the insurance company.
  • Provided a false statement claiming that a power outage caused food to spoil, including a watermelon, bread, ice cream and ground beef.
  • Provided a false statement claiming that a power surge damaged a refrigerator, resulting in food spoilage.
  • Providing false statements on two notarized affidavits claiming that water damage and a power outage damaged personal property.

The offenses occurred between March 28 and June 24.

Moore was arrested on Dec. 15 and released on $2,500 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Guilford County District Court on Jan. 14, 2025.

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud.

“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”
