North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Sally Ann Thompson, 38, of 354 Arboretum Drive, Wilmington, NC. Thompson was charged with nine counts of identity theft, nine counts of insurance fraud and three counts of obtaining property by false pretense. All 21 counts are felonies.
According to special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Thompson willfully stole identities of multiple people, including a deceased person, in attempts to obtain funds from the United Home Life Insurance Company/Indiana Farm Bureau. She also committed insurance fraud with those same nine false identities.
According to the arrest warrants, the offenses occurred during the months of March and August 2023.
Thompson was arrested on June 14 and released with a $27,000 unsecured bond. She is expected to appear in New Hanover County Court on June 18.
“Thanks to our agents for pursing this complex case. Insurance fraud is a highly destructive crime that hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
