Charlotte man charged with insurance fraud

RALEIGH
Jun 3, 2024

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Anthony Bernard Sims, 55, of 4114 Planters Watch Drive, Charlotte, was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Sims of submitting multiple automobile insurance claims to Peak Property and Casualty Insurance for the same damage.

According to the criminal summons, Sims was paid for damage to his vehicle on April 27, 2021, but later filed claims for the same damage on March 8, 2022, and June 17, 2022.

A criminal summons was served on Sims on May 28. He is due in Mecklenburg County District Court on June 7.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
