New Hanover County man charged with insurance fraud after claiming intentionally set vehicle fire

RALEIGH

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Scott Christopher Daniels, 48, of 1522 Whispering Wood S. Court, Wilmington, NC. Daniels was charged with one count of insurance fraud, a felony.

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Daniels attempted to defraud Peak Property and Casualty Insurance by providing a written and verbal statement that his vehicle was damaged by fire. An investigation later revealed that the fire had been intentionally set.

According to the arrest warrant, Daniels provided the fraudulent claim on June 14, 2023.

Daniels was released on a $25,000 secured bond, fingerprinted and appeared in New Hanover County Court on May 17.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
