North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Justin Emanuel Johnson, 27, of 205 Wiley St., Greensboro. Johnson faces charges of insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Johnson of trying to obtain $8,000 from his insurance company by claiming his 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee had been stolen. According to the arrest warrant, Johnson had previously sold his vehicle to a private party.
The offenses occurred on April 17.
Greensboro police also charged Johnson with making a false report to police, a misdemeanor, when he reported his vehicle stolen.
Following his arrest, Johnson was released on a written promise to appear in court. He is due in Guilford County District Court on Oct. 26.
“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
