North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Tasharn Monique Gilchrist, 48, of 1711 Liberty St., Durham, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.
According to the criminal summons, Gilchrist provided N.C. Farm Bureau Insurance Co. with fraudulent documents from her employer showing that she missed three days of work after an automobile crash when she did not miss work.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division served Gilchrist with a criminal summons on Dec. 17. She is scheduled to appear in Durham County District Court on Jan. 20, 2022.
“It’s estimated that property and casualty insurance fraud costs insurance customers $120 billion a year in increased premiums,” said Commissioner Causey. “The Department of Insurance has reinforced its criminal investigations procedures and personnel in an effort to make more arrests to keep fraud from driving up insurance costs.”
