North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Gary Buzzerio, 65, of 601 Capeside Drive, Wilmington, was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Buzzerio of obtaining $6,000 from Aflac Insurance in short-term disability insurance funds that he was not entitled to receive.
According to the criminal summons, Buzzerio told AFLAC that he could no longer work when he was still employed and working with Gibbs Management Services when he received the claim payment.
The offense occurred on March 3.
Buzzerio was served with a criminal summons on Aug. 12.
“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime; we all pay for it through higher insurance premiums,” said Commissioner Causey. “Help us keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspected fraud.”
If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may report fraud anonymously by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840. Information is also available at www.ncdoi.gov.
