North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Brittany Tyeshia Gibbs, 31, of 6305 Flower Field Lane, Raleigh. Gibbs was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Gibbs of telling Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. that she and her son were injured in an automobile crash in an attempt to obtain money from the insurance company when the two were not in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The offenses occurred between June 12 and Aug. 10.
Gibbs was arrested on Dec. 5 and given a $6,000 secured bond. She is due in Wake County District Court on Dec. 29.
Commissioner Causey estimates fraud costs North Carolinians nearly 20 cents on every dollar paid on insurance premiums. That’s why he has cracked down on this white-collar crime by boosting the NCDOI Criminal Investigations Division.
Over the past two years, CID Special Agents recovered $7.5 million in damages – money that was returned to consumers and insurance companies. The restitution also helps preserve insurance rates.
