North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey thanked the more than 900 Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteers who counsel Medicare recipients and help them save money on their premiums and copayments.
Commissioner Causey used National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 19-25, as an opportunity to extend his gratitude to the volunteers.
“Last year, North Carolina’s SHIIP volunteers saved senior citizens more than $55 million,” Commissioner Causey said. “That’s money that older North Carolinians, many of whom are on a fixed income, can use to spend as they see fit.”
In 2019, SHIIP volunteers helped nearly 80,000 senior citizens sift through their Medicare and long-term care options.
“Without our remarkable selfless volunteers, SHIIP would not be able to reach out to so many Medicare beneficiaries in our state, especially during these unprecedented and trying times,” Commissioner Causey said.
SHIIP counsels Medicare beneficiaries and caregivers about Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D and long-term care insurance.
Seniors and caregivers can find local SHIIP volunteers by clicking here or going to the Find a SHIIP Counselor webpage.
Since the program’s creation in 1986, North Carolina’s SHIIP has become a role model for other states and has received two national awards for innovative and exemplary service.
SHIIP counselors are not licensed agents. They do not sell, endorse or oppose any product plan or company. If you have questions about your specific plan, we encourage you to contact your insurance agent or insurance company.
