Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of 70 individuals charged with rate evasion in Mecklenburg County.
Department of Insurance criminal investigators accuse the defendants of deliberately evading automobile insurance rates in Mecklenburg County by fraudulently reporting the same address at 8814 Silver Charm Lane, Waxhaw. Investigators allege that 70 taxi and limousine drivers were attempting to evade the higher automobile insurance premiums in Charlotte.

An estimated 10 cents of every dollar paid in premiums goes toward the payment of fraudulent claims. The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud.
