North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center invite Medicare recipients to a Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) town hall meeting to learn more about Medicare cost-saving programs.
This event is free and open to the public. Participants will have the opportunity to meet Commissioner Causey. SHIIP staff members and volunteers will be on hand to provide information about Medicare basics and how to apply for Extra Help, a federal subsidy for people with limited incomes and assets to assist with Medicare prescription drug plan costs. SHIIP will also emphasize the importance of beneficiaries reviewing and comparing Medicare Part D prescription drug plans during the annual election period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Refreshments will be provided.
SHIIP, which has been serving Medicare beneficiaries in North Carolina for more than 30 years, trains volunteer counselors across the state to assist beneficiaries in their home counties. SHIIP is a division of the N.C. Department of Insurance and provides free, unbiased Medicare counseling in all 100 counties.
The New Hanover County Senior Resource Center, located at 2222 S. College Road, Wilmington, is the SHIIP counseling site for New Hanover County. The program is directed by Allie Hernandez and Kelly Morgan. New Hanover County has 17 trained SHIIP volunteer counselors ready to help their neighbors better understand Medicare and all of the available programs.
